Odd headline in the Gazette

I had meant to post this earlier but am getting around to it now. This was a most peculiar headline in the metro section of the Aug. 30 Gazette:

"Catholic official joins D-49 board"

Why is the fact that he's a Catholic official worthy of the main focus of the headline? Would the same have been highlighted if he was an official of, say, a Muslim church, an evangelical church or a Jewish synagogue?

Is this highlighted because they thought it was the most important aspect of his background? If so, then why? Is this to suggest that he might try to influence the board with Catholic teachings?

I'm not sure of the motive, but this is one headline that deserves a do-over.
