Emily, Jacob most popular baby names in 2005

What is it about the name Jacob?

For the 10th year in a row, Jacob was the most popular name for boys born in the state of Colorado, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The last name to hold the title belt was Michael in 1995 (this name slipped to a tie for seventh in 2005). Last year, Jacob was followed by Joshua, Alexander, Joseph and Ethan. Joshua is the second-most popular name for the fourth consecutive year.

There was a bit of an upset on the girls' side, as Emily edged out defending champion Emma by one baby. Abigail was a distant third, followed by Madison, Isabella and Olivia.

According to the CDPHE, nearly 70,000 babies were born in Colorado last year. The report also broke down name selections by demographic. Among Hispanics, the most popular names were Jose and Ashley. Among African Americans, Elijah was tops among boys and Nevaeh ("heaven" spelled backwards) for girls.

Names that didn't crack the top 50: Dawn, Sunshine, Sky, Cielo and Star for girls, and Archer, Catcher, Fisher and Walker for boys.

My name, William, almost cracked the top 10... it was 11th.
