Early results are in for DVC
The early box office totals are in for the weekend and, as expected, the public made "The Da Vinci Code" a hit despite terrible reviews from critics. It made an estimated $77 million in the United States and an amazing $147 million around the rest of the world. That's $224 million worldwide for those keeping track at home. That also more than covers the $125 million production cost and approximately $25-$50 million in promotional costs. So Ron Howard, Tom Hanks, megaproducer Brian Grazer and Columbia Pictures can laugh off this travesty of a film all the way to the bank.
The question now is, what happens the next weekend? Does everyone come back and tell their friends how much the movie sucked or do they encourage them to "seek the truth," as author Dan Brown wants us to do? Despite the bad reviews, we would be foolish to now simply ignore it and hope it goes away. Before the film was even made, 40 million people read the book. It is still important for us to keep brushing up on Scripture, church teachings and church history to answer any questions DVC watchers/readers might have.
[Note: There has been a call for some time for an "other-cott" by choosing to support a different movie this weekend (most folks have pushed the cartoon "Over the Hedge"). OTH fared OK with $37 million but did less than half the box office of DVC.
Did you participate in the "other-cott?" What movie did you see?]
